  EGYPT AND DEMOCRACY

June 17, 2005

One of the current events in Egypt is Democracy...personally I do not take this word lightly. It is a meaningful word, and very complicated.  Briefly, without getting tangled with, What is Democracy, and how can we accomplish it?  For now - let us be brief and say Democracy is a Necessity and a Right, not a Priviledge.  That means that People wherever should demand  Democracy!.... Usually Democracy is not granted, but it is demanded!  Rulers and Presidents , and that includes Egypt, should understand that they are Public Servants, who work for the People and are paid by the People, through the impossed taxes on them,  and I recommend strongly that we should change the title of President of Egypt to one of these titles...The Head Public Servant of Egypt, or, The President of Public Servant of Egypt, in that case that President will always remember that He is a servant for Egypt"s Public Interest, and that he works for the People, not the People work for him.  In my opinion, the President of Egypt should not be  a kingly position, as we see now...in the Kingdom of the Republic of Egypt, with a ruler for 24 years, and, he wants more - Egypt"s President is a Big Responsibility, and a Complicated Task...and, not an Ego or Arrogant Trip, and, he or she the President should be treated as a Chairman of the Board of a Corporation, and the Stockholders are the Egyptian Citizens,  He / she  should be questioned with the Government he/ she is selected on their balance sheet, and if the President does not perform, he or she should be kicked out..I mean fired, I mean Impeached, I mean thrown out of his or her job!  This is the President"s job, not to hear that he or she is irreplaceable, .... Egypt has a lot of Good, well educated, and sophisticated minds.  I say it is obsurd,  insultting, and an embarrassment for the Great Egypt and the Great Egyptian People to be ruled by one man for 24 consequetive years... and Nicaragua, and San Salvador, The Phillipines, Nigeria, and in every place, people select their Presidents through free elections!  .....Pinoche of Chile was the last reminder of Regimes such as Mubarak, and he may just end up by being pursued  by Local and International Criminal and Civil Courts..The coming elections in Egypt are not the end, but, it is the beginning...my advice is that no Egyptian Government Leaders should violate Human Rights, or committ Crimes of torture, false arrests,  fabrication of accusations, intimidation, or unconstitutional prosecutions, they will be pursued, and they will have no place to hide, and no country will be able to accept, protect  them, or shield them.  Some day, if they are stupid enough, they will remember my words.  As a former Police Major with the Ministry of Interior, I witnessed all types of torture, falsifying  elections, and general abuse of the Egyptian Citizens..I remember once in a closed meeting, in 1974, in El Gizira Officer"s Club when Enabu Esmail, the Minister of Interior at that time, when he said things that made me think twice, if I wanted to continue being a part of that system, and, I decided that it was all in contradiction to my conscience, my principles, and my legal education, then, I decided that I am leaving the country...and, I left in 1980, I was a Major at that time.  I never wanted to leave my Beloved Egypt, but, I did not have any other options.....  I was always interested in Human Rights, Justice, and Respect to Individuals...It is time for me to come back, I will be interested to start a Public Interest Law Firm...to keep any eye on all Government Agencies, and corperations,  to insure that there will not be any abuses to the people, and the environment.  I have very high hopes that Egypt"s time is here....and I can see in the next few years  we will have a Great Country, and  We will not import any Western, or American Idoligies of Democray or Justice, but, we will build our own according to our family structures, our customs,  our beliefs,  and our principles....a true democracy and justice, and my dream will become a Reality!
